Intro to Game Worlds

Welcome! Let’s start our journey by talking about the game world, the virtual space where our game happens. The game world can be defined as the digital realm where a game takes place, including the landscapes, characters, objects, and rules that make up the environment. In other words, it’s the stage for our game. Even a simple 3D game scene contains some standard elements: we have shapes or objects placed in a coordinate system, a camera to view them, lights to illuminate them, and materials to give them color and texture. All these pieces together create an immersive world for the player. We build the game world by creating a scene (a container for all objects), then adding things like terrain, characters, and props into it. Think of it like setting up a tiny universe inside your computer. We also define the rules of this world (for example, gravity or game objectives) as part of its environment. A well-crafted game world can be as small as a single room or as large as an entire planet – whatever suits our game’s story and design. It’s not just a backdrop; it shapes the gameplay and narrative, making the experience engaging for the player. Now that we know what a game world is and what it consists of, we’re ready to explore why building games in the browser is so exciting today.
